Workshops 2010

Sunday, September 12*

Laura Wasilowski

Laura Wasilowski

A well-placed embroidery stitch on the surface of fabric brings a quilt to life. It lends the surface additional color, pattern, definition, and texture. In this class you will make a small flower quilt from a pre-fused fabric kit. Basic embroidery stitches are reviewed using brilliantly colored pearl cotton threads (also part of the kit). Learn to entice the viewer closer to your art with free form, unfettered embroidery.

Pam Rocco

Inspired by African-American quilters and artists such as Nancy Crow, Pam turned to making quilts out of old clothes (britches quilts) when her children were teenagers. Now, her specialty is loud and peculiar fabrics, resulting in the unique and bold designs for which she’s known.

Rocco will share her secrets for all things corduroy from selecting thrift store garments to cutting up the garment and on to freehand curves. She’ll bring numerous corduroy garments and scraps to share, and to supplement your corduroy stash. In return, she asks participants to trade their scraps with one another. Her sewing tips are revealed along with her phone number and the phone number of a machine quilter. As she says, “I'm happy to answer questions from now to eternity for everyone who attends the workshop.”

Pam has yet to venture into the techie world of websites for herself. However, Workshop participants at PVQA, our neighbor guild to the north, enthusiastically showed off the quilts and wallhangings made earlier this Spring.
