Holly Casey and Sharon WinterPreparing Your Quilt for the QuilterMeeting Monday, May 3, 2010 Holly Casey and Sharon Winter “Preparing Your Quilt Top for the Quilter” When you need a job done well, go to an expert. This month, we consult two machine quilting experts about the best way to prepare a quilt for quilting. Holly Casey has dabbled in quilting for most of her life, considering it a passionate hobby for more than 20 years. Early into the quilting adventure, like most of us, her quilts were hand quilted. When that took too long, Casey quilted them on her domestic machine. She thinks of the quilting process as a chance to add an extra design element. From the moment she first saw a longarm machine, she dreamed of owning one. It took 10 years, but the dream became reality in 2008. Machine quilting became even more enjoyable with the flexibility that a longarm offers and the diversity of designs possible. She’s a frequent exhibitor at Pacific International Quilt Festival and has participated in a number of international quilt challenges. A few of her patterns are published through Brookshier Design Studio. Holly is a founding member of the Valley Heritage Quilt Guild in King City and has taught numerous classes with that group. Joining MPQG broadened her circle of quilting friends. For more information about Holly’s service, go to: http://www.hollycaseyquilts.com |

Meri VahlMy Quilting Journey
Vahl is a Central Coast art quilter with a repertoire of meticulously crafted fiber art. Like many of us, her early quilts were more traditional designs but always with a great eye for color and texture. Here recent creations use more non-traditional fabrics and embellishments. Join us to learn more about her creative journey. Her Flower Market of Chichicastenango, Guatemala won Best Quilt at the Mancuso Brother's Best Quilts of the World 2009 competition. The wall quilt is a fabric collage with an overlay of fine tulle which was then overstitched. Meri’s fine art background comes through in the faces which were created using Caran d'Ache brand Aquarelle watercolor pencils. Meri was born in New York and received a BA in Fine Arts from U.C. Berkeley. She teaches art quilting techniques in the Santa Cruz area. Her art quilts have won top awards at the Santa Cruz Art League’s Textile Arts Show, Pacific International Quilt Festival, and Mancuso Brothers’ World Quilt Competition. Her work has also been shown at the Monterey Fine Arts Museum. |
